The Doctorate of Clinical Psychology in the UK is notoriously difficult to get in, but as it turns out, getting in was only the beginning. This is one of the most frequently asked questions I’ve had since starting TheOxfordPsych. Note 1: Since October 2019, graduates of a UK degree can stay for 2 years after graduation to work in the UK. 2 years for Bachelors & Master's and 3 years for PhD degrees. You can only do this once (i.e. not do it for every graduate degree you take). This can probably help with the post-master's job searc...

    I think it's really important that people understand this applies to any degree that doesn't walk you into an understaffed mandatory study industry (doctor, engineer, lawyer, accountant etc). I know peers that have had this problem and studied maths. Yes, maths is like a super power hard skill but if you don't know where you want to go with it, you can make it meaningless and unfulfilling. The hard truth to psychology is that it's underfunded in public sectors and not particularly profitable in private ones. However, its broadness is it's strength as long as you have clear personal/professional goals. I don't like the sentiment to this video, but it is undeniable you pose many hard questions we should all be asking ourselves in our careers and studies, regardless of the major.

    I dont know where you get your wages for a clinical psych from but they are very wrong. You do not earn £30k as a fully qualified clinical psychologist! You earn anywhere from 50k-100k in the Uk and there are MANY jobs going in clinical psychology and the field of mental health, so for those who are watching this, don’t lose heart!

    At the end of the day, everything you’ve said is true. I earned a Psyd and honestly, in previous career fields where I’ve worked ( HR Mgr,. Project mgmt, training & dev) the pay is about the same. If you are passionate about helping people w mental and emotional health issues and have compassion and empathy for people, then you are a good fit for obtaining your license as a psychotherapist!! Best wishes!

    This has been an interesting take. I'm not sure just how much this applies to someone who lives over in the U.S., but I guess an upside for me is that I'll have other marketable skills while pursuing my degree as someone who is resuming college at 25 with life exp points 🤷🏽‍♀️. Seriously though, this is why I've waited on finishing any degree because college is a scam to get you to climb their latter for a job you hopefully can get doing what you actually want to do...or at least be equipped with the title (more so than the skillset it seems) to be considered qualified to do what you want in a private sector!

    I just graduated from my undergrads and I cant land a job. The jobs that I got are either underpaid or minimum wage. I’m planning to continue my masters in clin psych but honestly I kinda gave up on this field. I really wanted to be in a healthcare setting and I wanted to see people getting better with my help but where Im from, the psychiatrist are the ones controlling the mental health field. Another option id embark in is I will probably take a part time study in a degree that is more skill oriented.

    Tbfair PWP after AP is a very odd route, so I see why you went on so quickly. And UCL is hardcore compared to Cambridge for medical.

  • @aps-pictures9335
    @aps-pictures9335 3 місяці тому

    I highly recommend most people, if they can afford it, avoid PWP and go to an MSc if Counselling/being a therapist is your end goal. Otherwise you’re just adding lower paid years on to your career that aren’t potentially necessary. If you have no experience in helping people, or want to move into Clinical Psych for example, then this is maybe a good idea.

    Is CAP different from CAAP? Clinical associate in applied psychology, also not sure if this is only in Scotland perhaps? I thought of taking a break from care assistant and started navigating a whole other field finding it difficult to come back or get openings in psychology now. I am curious if I should explore Behavior mentor roles? My goal is CAAP, but international students it is tricky. Thank you for your video it is really helpful!

    18:49 I'm glad Alain De Botton didn't become a clinical psychologist and went down the philosophy route instead - he has more freedom to think, to express his wisdom and isn't constrained by his profession's desperation to present its knowledge as science. I feel CP can learn at lot more from Alain than Alain can from CP.

    I think, if you want to take this degree, it's should be because it's inline with your passion, and not just because you think you can land a certain job after this. Plus, after all there's high competition in employment whatever degree you finished.

      You can study a "passion for psychology" online and with books while working a higher paying job in a field that doesnt need a degree and not be 100k+ in debt. That is the issue.

    One point that I agree on, if you want to still take a degree in psychology, you should know exactly why you want it and what to do with that degree afterwards. I am now working with a psychologist who's a humanitarian and a businessman at the same time. There so much I learned from him and he's so enthusiastic about the idea that I'm interested to get bachelor's degree in psychology.
